The time and fare tables seen above are from 1932 as
operated by Old Tom Motor Services, based in Manor Road, Laindon.
The prices shown are
pre-decimal with 1 shilling (12 old pennys) being worth 5p following decimalisation on 15th
February 1971.
Tom Webster, who ran the company, started the business in 1921 with a service
to Wash Road, Laindon. His sons Tom and Dick joined the business and, as the company grew he
expanded operations, so that by 1936, when the company was sold to 'New Empress Saloons Ltd' - operators of
the City services, his fleet of buses stood at 8.
He died in 1963 and is remembered for providing an invaluable
service to local people at a time when motoring was still in its infancy.
