The date today is Monday, April 29, 2024
2017LT Carpets announce the closure of its original store at Timberlog Lane, Basildon. The business is named after Len Thipthorpe who founded it in 1942 at the family's home - then called Woodview and later numbered 198 - and following his retirement in 1992 was taken over by brothers Darren and Gary Laver.
1973Temple of Light Christian Spiritualist Church at 8 Bedford Road, Laindon opened. Construction of the building had begun in 1965 and progressed slowly with much of the funding coming through church activities and voluntary donations. Much of the work, including the concrete supports for the roof, were undertaken by Laindon resident Tom Price aided by George Edwards of Langdon Hills. Prior to the opening date 'Temple of Light' services were held for approximately 27 years at the British Legion Hall in High Road, Laindon. A Healing Sanctuary, begun in 1981, was completed later in the decade.
