G. I. Barnett & Son
G.I. Barnett & Son, publishers & cartographers are best known for producing local area street maps. The
company, which had been based in Becontree Heath, Essex, began as G.I. Barnett and produced the earliest known street map of 'Basildon New Town' in 1951. They also produced
a series of black and white postcards around the 'new town' in the late 1950s. They are still active today and based at 6 Tadworth Parade, Elm Park, Hornchurch, Essex. |

Colourmaster International
Founded in the early 1960s as Photo Precision Ltd by two Royal Air Force (R.A.F.)
photo reconnaissance officers. The company was later taken over and rebranded Colourmaster Ltd in 1969. The company has since ceased trading. |

Surridge Dawson
Surridge Dawson & Co. Ltd printers/publishers and newspaper distributors began as
two separate companies, these being William Dawson & Sons Ltd, who set up a company in 1809, and P.W.J. Surridge & Sons, Ltd., who established theirs in 1905. The two companies merged in 1934. Their headquarters were in London but they had many outlets
around the country including Southend-on-Sea. This was at 18 Clifftown Road but they also had an office and works in High Road, Laindon. The Laindon premises opened around 1939 at 34 High Road in a small parade of 5 shops
between Durham Road and the entrance to D.C. Jeakin's removals and storage yard. When that row of shops was cleared for demolition they relocated in 1962 to the east side of
High Road to No.1 Dorset Parade to a shop previously occupied by A.J. Curtis & Sons (footfitters), where they remained until the early 1970s when that parade of shops was also
cleared for demolition, bringing their association with Laindon to an end. They produced many postcards, not just from around Basildon but also of locations at Exeter and Brighton among others. |
