The Town Centre shopping block comprising Market Square, Fodderwick (No. 1-3), Market Pavement (No.s 2-12 even) and Town Square
(No.s 2-76 even) is demolished in preparation of a high rise apartments development called 'Market Square'. The block, constructed in 1958, was the first to be built
in the Town Centre and included the shop unit (No. 65-67 Market Square) where the first shop, Henbest & Son (Menswear & Schoolwear), was opened on Saturday 16th August. |

German discount supermarket chain Lidl open a replacement store in High Road, Laindon. The store,
which replaces the existing smaller store in Manor Road (closed 25/02/2026), is the first completed for use new building to occupy the site
of the former Laindon Shopping Centre, which has been undergoing a regeneration begun in 2019. |
