The Town Centre shopping block comprising Market Square, Fodderwick (No. 1-3), Market Pavement (No.s 2-12 even) and Town Square (No.s 2-76 even) is demolished in preparation of a high rise apartments development called 'Market Square'. The block, constructed in 1958, was the first to be built in the Town Centre and included the shop unit (No. 65-67 Market Square) where the first shop, Henbest & Son (Menswear & Schoolwear), was opened on Saturday 16th August.

28th April

Basildon Borough Council reintroduce plastic bags to its weekly refuse collection. The new system using single use plastic bags for recyclable waste replaces the previous system that used reusable coloured sacks; those being blue for paper and cardboard and white for cans and plastic. The sacks were introduced by the then conservative controlled council due to a new requirement to separate paper/cardboard from cans/plastic, previously collected together in a single use pink plastic bag. Unfortunately the sacks proved unpopular with tenants with many complaining through social media for change. The blue and white coloured scheme used for the sacks was retained following the change back to plastic bags.

Labour Councillor Allan Davies (Fryerns Ward) is re-elected as Mayor of Basildon. Councillor Gillian Palmer (Labour), representing Pitsea South East Ward, was appointed Deputy Mayor.

08th July

Local MP James McMurdock formally resigns as a member of Reform UK. The MP, representing the South Basildon and East Thurrock constituency, formally left the Party having surrendered the whip three days earlier over alleged financial irregularities during the Covid-19 pandemic. He was later cleared of any wrongdoing by a parliamentary investigation and now sits as an independent.

26th February

German discount supermarket chain Lidl open a replacement store in High Road, Laindon. The store, which replaces the existing smaller store in Manor Road (closed 25/02/2026), is the first completed for use new building to occupy the site of the former Laindon Shopping Centre, which has been undergoing a regeneration begun in 2019.

21st May

Reform Councillor Sam Journet (St. Martin's Ward) is elected as the 8th Mayor of Basildon. Cllr. Damion Lewis (Reform), representing Langdon Hills Ward, is appointed as Deputy Mayor. In being voted Mayor Cllr. Journet becomes the first Reform UK mayor and the second Basildon mayor to be neither a Conservative or Labour Councillor to hold the position of 'First Citizen'; David Harrison (Independent Independence Party), being the other back in 2016. The previous outgoing mayor, Allan Davies, who held the position for two terms, did not stand for election having stood down as a councillor.
