In answer to the 2007 question. Jack was my great uncle. A real gentleman who sadly passed away end of 1996.

I knew Jack very well, my boyfriend Ron had a free pass for 2 every week because his mum was a cleaner at the Cinema. We did use it most weeks for
about 2 years. Lovely man, always had a chat and a smile.

I remember Jack very well. We worked together at the cinema for a number of years. I was the chief projectionist there. As you say a real gentleman. He lived
at the time with his mother on the old Five Bell hill. The bungalow is still there and the tin mission hall next door. He married at a late age to one of the women
that work with us. I lived on the other side of the level crossing from the Five Bells so I knew Jack before I started working at the cinema.

| 02. Emily Lodge, Nevendon |

Trying to find out please whether the above subject mentioned name of a house "Emily Lodge" does at all still exist or whether any one at all has any information on where
Emily Lodge was or perhaps still stands. A photo of the Emily Lodge, if possible, in its 1938 state, would be great.
The full address, which I have obtained from a 1938 birth certificate, is Emily Lodge, Nevendon Road, Nevendon (in the district of Billericay UD).
If I am correct,
I read this evening that Timberlog Lane was once formerly Nevendon Road, so what part or where abouts the house Emily Lodge once perhaps stood I don't know although I
came across a house by the name of "Emily" in Highlands Avenue, which came off of Bull Road and ran southwards to Highview Road. That comes from a c.1950 map. Bull & Highview
both came off Timberlog Lane or the possibly then Nevendon Road.
Any help, assistance and information on this address and house name would be great.
Kind Regards
Tim Bates

| 07. Drapers shop in Pitsea |
Posted by David in Leigh on 2/6/2014, 5:25 pm
I remember what I think was a drapers shop in Pitsea in the early 1950's on the old A13 that had an overhead mechanical system for cash and
receipts by use of tracks and wires and little containers.
Does anybody have a name for this shop or even any photos please? This is just out of interest.
Many thanks.

Hi David.
The Drapers shop was called Herbert J Cooks, it also had a nice toy department.
I bought a 00 Hornby Train Set there in the late 50s, which I still have
all boxed and mint. As far as I remember the overhead cash containers were still in use then.
Hope this helps.
John

I also remember the Herbert J Cooke shop featuring the overhead cash container system, which as kid was fascinating to see working. The Co-op shop in Vange also had the same system,
but of course much larger.
When thinking of Cooke's shop one is reminded of them being a crucial part of a small supply source in Pitsea. E.g. King's the butcher and Bedwell's were
ajoining shops. So I can remember my mother raving about the wonderful pork sausages from King's and my first Raleigh bike being purchased from Bedwell's.
Having lived in Australia for 50 years I still clearly remember the Pitsea of old.

Remember H Cooks for over head receipt and cash system also remember other shops Kings Butchers, Bedwells bikes (his brother had a mens outfitters in Vange) also Hickleys electrical
goods other side of road near Lloyds bank and Mabs another drapers store and Warrs fruit and veg plus fish restaurant not forgetting my favourite down station lane
The Pram Shop (Toys). Got burnt down mid 50s I cried .... Lady who ran the shop moved into the Shop that eventually became Hickleys
Happy days.

I remember going in to this shop with my mum many times in the early 50s and seeing the money being put into the tubes which went round the shop
on a cable. Also I remember behind the counter like a lift system of black tubes. Where the tubes were all side by side. Lloyds bank was next door.
I would love to see an old photo of this shop.
Its sad that all the old pitsea has gone now.
