Hello

I know years ago there was a thread in respect of this factory, which has been archived and the email address disconnected. I am desperate to speak to anyone who worked at or knew the factory in Paycocke Road. I worked there mid 70's - mid 80's. Names I can remember are Martin Hughes (wife Debbie), John Bradshaw (wife Kim), Laurence Butler, Kevin Burns (used to drink in the Plough & Tractor), Robert Linard, Danny Moore (I apologise for any misspelling of names.) Please contact me with any other names or information

Thanks John

I've been trying to remember the former name of the Beehive pub, opposite Basildon train station, can anyone tell me what it is please?

Many thanks in advance.

03.  War Memorials
Posted by Terry Jeffreys on 17/11/2020, 4:36 am

I see that some research has been done on the war memorials in the Borough especially by Peter Brown up to 2013 and then carried on by Basildon Heritage.

Could we have a progress report please?

Hi does anyone remember the Christmas nativity at school and the choir, use to practice most days in the run up to the nativity getting out of lessons and playtime. Mrs Jeffrey was our choir teacher also headmistress, played the piano which was a baby grand!

all the parents came to the show , my mum always said it was the best she ever went to. we were a good choir. in the 4th year my best friends were Dot, Sylvia and Laverne. lost touch once I left school, hope they are all ok. take care all. Diane.

Hi Diane, apologies if this is posted twice.

Yes I certainly remember the concerts. There were tableaux on the stage behind which you were not to look at during the performance.
I seem to recall Mrs Jefferies being given a bunch of flowers at the end of the performance.
I always tell people I had a great education at Craylands and a happy childhood in Basildon.
No reunion this year. I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well.

All the best Tony

Me and my mate Patrick Toland blew up the Overhead Line that was put up after the steam days only 6 months before at Timberlog lane bridge in July 1962
we was walking along the sewer that runs over the railway and a load of wire was tangled around our wellingtons so Patrick picked it up and dangled it over the side it then tripped the Overhead line wire there was a very loud bang and flash we rushed out of that sewer i think faster than superman only to be confronted by Shaun Clifford who said "What ya done" i said to him "Don't touch us we are all Electrocuted"
we had Arch eyes for the following 5 days
in the paper the head lines where "Miracle saved by boots" and then the following week they erected the curved spikes that are still there today

The first shop to open in the Town Centre was by Henbest the Tailor from Laindon. John Walton opened afterwards...Henbest shop is where the pie and mash shop is now.

Update: Robin's Pie & Mash shop forced to move, whole block bulldozed in the name of progress!

That area of the Town Centre should have remained as shops not residential tower blocks. Someone's making money!

Where is the history of Riverside?
There was three separate phases

1 Basildon Youth Association see fst first part video A supposedly self run club authorised by a Reporter for Mr Boniface. Secretary Margot

2 The Riverside Club completely self run by a group of responsible fun lovers who self maintained. They had a club mod membership of 200, hired bands and protected the club and members from outside violence and party party Core was Konrad, Lloy, Arthur. Big Ken, John now deceased. Also myself Terry, Big Bob, Little Ken. Ginger, Dave still around Secretary Margo

Club ran down to last three custodians Little Kem, John and myself secretary Margo

3 Club invaded. overtaken and regularly desecrated by outsiders with alleged booze and drugs (alledged in Sunday Newspaper)

4 Allegedly vast embarassment to. Club bulldozed to ground as never existed

I was custodian of film of club and had video copies made and distributed I could not find the second part with club members konrad and Dave on this site but have it here. Many happy memories. There must be over 200 plus people who wonder why this appears whitewashed?

I recently learnt of the new swimming pool at Pitsea. I used the old pool on occasion so this has to be a good thing for the area

11.  Pitsea Nudist Camp
Posted by Mandy Wallis on 12/8/2025, 11:08 am

I lived in Rectory Gardens, Pitsea in the early 1970s. I remember the road was all bungalows and mostly had elderly people living in them. The road itself was unmade and just mud. I remember slipping and sliding all over the place as my dad drove his car up to our bungalow. Later before we left to live somewhere else the road was made up properly by the council. At the top of the road, it led to open fields with the odd bungalow here and there, it was a haven for wildlife.

There was an elderly couple that lived towards the top of the road that my dad had become friendly with. They told him that when they first moved to the property many years before they made a surprising discovery. One day they were in their back garden and out of the wooded area beyond appeared a naked woman and a man. Apparently, they were staying in a nudist camp and had wandered beyond the boundary.

It seems strange but yes, there was a nudist camp in Rectory Road. The elderly couple told my dad that they used to see expensive cars arrive outside the camp and very wealthy looking people, dressed in lavish clothes arrive for their stay. As a child I have never forgotten this story, there was certainly no sign of anyone naked walking around when we lived there.
