01.  Emily Lodge & the Nevendon Surround

Emily Lodge

With the release of the 1939 Register I have finally traced the position of Emily Lodge, Find My Past - 1930 register, the use of old maps from National Library of Scotland, Maps, and Ordnance Survey Map, general maps, which I use like Google, and assistance from both The London Gazette and London Gazette PDF File & British Newspaper Archives, I also use Find My Past on Find My Past article.

10/2/2014

“Trying to find out please whether the above subject mentioned name of a house "Emily Lodge" does at all still exist or whether any one at all has any information on where Emily Lodge was or perhaps still stands. A photo of the Emily Lodge, if possible, in its 1938 state, would be great. The full address, which I have obtained from a 1938 birth certificate, is Emily Lodge, Nevendon Road, Nevendon (in the district of Billericay UD).

If I am correct, I read this evening that Timberlog Lane was once formerly Nevendon Road, so what part or where abouts the house Emily Lodge once perhaps stood I don't know although I came across a house by the name of "Emily" in Highlands Avenue, which came off of Bull Road and ran southwards to Highview Road. That comes from a c.1950 map. Bull & Highview both came off Timberlog Lane or the possibly then Nevendon Road. Any help, assistance and information on this address and house name would be great”

Emily Lodge, Nevendon Road (Timberlog Lane) stood, on todays maps, very close to the southwest corner, heading north, of the East Mayne (A132) & Cranes Farm Road (A1235) roundabout, near to what was the then Jolly Cricketers Stores & Nevendon Garage.

Having a very good picture of where it stood I am now wanting to source pictures / photos from the 1939 era of the mentioned area please. Any assistance would be great please.

Kind Regards

Tim Bates

02.  The Avenue, Nevendon

The Avenue

With the release of the 1939 Register and the assisting web sites, mentioned in my "Emily Lodge" post earlier today, I now wish to source any pictures / photos from the 1939 era of the mentioned avenue and surrounding area please.

A road “The Avenue” ran parallel with the then referred to Nevendon Road, (Timberlog Lane) and now East Mayne (A132). It was a short road that came off Cranes Farm Road heading southward to a dead end. I believe it either once did, or eventually did, join onto Nevendon Road by what was Cricketers Road.

Any assistance would be great please.

Kind Regards

Tim Bates

03.  Vange Hall
Posted by Mark Reed on 25/3/2016, 6:21 am

Hi very new to this forum, my interest is in the old Vange Hall which used to be on the golf course.
I came across it's existence through a sign post that had been put up by the council.
I live about 15 minutes walk from the site and had gone past where it stood for years without even knowing a building had once been there.

Having found out this place existed I became curious so decided to look into it. I was given a book which shows a couple of pictures and gives a bit of history. I know it was demolished in the 80's, just intrgued to learn a bit more about it maybe see some more pictures.

If anyone has any info I'd be interested to hear it

All the best

Mark

04.  Bowers United Football Club
Posted by Duncan Grant on 10/4/2016, 11:30 am

Hi I am looking into the History of Bowers United FC. Does anyone have any photographs 1946 when they played in Pitsea behind the Railway Hotel or when they moved to play behind the Gun Pub at Bowers Gifford or any other information? Anything borrowed will be returned accordingly.

Also looking for any living relatives of Bert or Len Salmon who started this football club up!

Kind Regards

Duncan

Hi Arthur

I would love to have copies of the photos and anything else you may have? My email address is duncanrgr@gmail.com

Would you place date and name anything that you send me. If you can could you put a few words together about your time at Bowers United? Do you remember who held what committee places at the football club?

Thank you very much

Duncan Grant

I'm trying to find relatives of EE Hart then bookmakers in 1953 onwards. 14 Station Lane, Pitsea.

One of the daughters was Jane. Just for old time sake.

06.  Fryerns? Farm track?
Posted by Tim on 3/5/2016, 5:23 pm

Hi,

I regularly walk my dog around Whitmore Park, I work close by. On the eastern side there is a double row of tree and what appears to be a now grass covered road, with signs of a ditch either side, oddly this sparked enough interest in me to find some old maps of pre new town Basildon, wondering if what I could see actually was an old roadway, to my surprise I think I am right!

It appears the road/track used to lead to a building called Fryerns, as seen on a map from the 18th Century.

I've looked for me more information on this building but cannot find anything, so again wondered if anyone here could help?

Is this the building the area takes its name from, was it the farm that's often mentioned? Does anyone have a photo or some history to share? Also is this the only remaining outline of the original landscape left?

Many thanks

Tim

What park are we talking about the Frypa or Whitmore park?

Hi, I think it's the Whitmore park, where the bowling green is?

Yes.

The farm track lead to Fryerns Farm which stood just in front of the church on Whitmore Way.

It is shown on the 1898 map as being tree-lined.

My great grandmother, Sarah Jane Bilton, died at Biltondale, in Butlers Grove, Langdon Hills, in June 1940.

Would the house still be there now, and was it given a number please.?

08.  All Saints Church - Vange
Posted by Frank Davies on 24/5/2016, 7:28 am

My name is Frank and I am researching my family history.

My great grandparents are buried in the church graveyard, I don't have their burial dates but I do have the date of their deaths. William John Jackson, died on the 6th of August 1942, his wife Sarah Catharine died on the 31st of January 1948.

Their son, William Charles Jackson, who is my grandfather, was also buried there, he died on the 16 of August 1972.

I am looking for any information at all about their burials. If someone would be so kind as to find their graves and send me photos I would be very appreciative.

If any more information is required please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you

If you contact St Chads church at Vange, someone there should be able to tell you where the graves are (for a small donation)

Hello Denise,
Thank you very much for contacting me, it is most appreciated.

I had a reply from Pamela Binfield in July last year and she told me that she and her husband had a walk around the cemetery but were unable to find the graves in question. Unfortunately copies from the register and a plan/layout of the cemetery were not forthcoming.

I live in Australia otherwise I would have made the trip myself.

Kind Regards

Frank

If I have a chance, I will visit the church and look for the most recent grave Frank.

You could try writing to David ?Lambert? c/o Rectory, St. Chads, Clayhill Road, Vange, Essex to ask if the past church warden (David) or anyone else can help you in your search. Not positve his name is lambert. He mapped every single Grave, marked and unmarked, and can point you in the direction of those that are buried in years of undergrowth or behind trees and scrubs that have grown up since the 1950s.

Will be a little while before I get there as I have been having hopital treatment (what fun!) Denise

Hello Denise,

Thank you very much for your email and your kind offer to visit the church. If you can do that and actually find the graves in question that would be terrific.

I must admit that I am a little disappointed that the information I am after is so hard to come by, I would have thought that maintenance of actual church records would have been a source of pride by the incumbent vicars.

I hope your hospital treatment is nothing too serious, I am of an age where I have some experience of these things - unfortunately.

I will look into your suggestion and see if I can connect with David. It sounds as if he has the information I am looking for.

I look forward to hearing from you and I will let you know how I go.

Kind Regards,

Frank

Hello Frank - not good news I'm afraid. I spent an hour and a half walking round the graveyard inspecting all the headstone for names.

No Jackson's. Many graves were unmarked - no headstone and in many cases, no kerbstones either. Some, that weren't that old were unreadable (sad to say because they were poor quality - could tell, as they were same material/design). A few are "hidden" or "buried" behind or under scrub or trees and can't be viewed unless the scrub, etc cleared. We have done that in the past but it does take hours!

David is your best bet. He can tell where any grave is and if it's not "hidden", show you where it is. Truly! I've witnessed one plot being discovered and another (under a large amount of scrub and trees) that had friend Mike's baby sister in from the 1940s. So there is hope!If you contact David and you can't get to the church, I could go and take photos if we can get to them. The areas that your graves -40s & 70s,- are in mostly open areas.

Sorry I wsn't able to find them Frank.

The church is redundant but open every day 10-3pm by the "Friends of All Saints" who love and look after it. Twice a year they have a "gardening day" where they try to remove scrub and rogue trees. The council cuts the grass 4 times a year. SO - the church and graveyard is loved. Most of the "friends" are female and retired! Surprise, surprise!

Regards

Denise

I love this site, some of the photos are amazing!

I set-up a smaller site, BasildonHistory.wix.com/Essex, as I'm tired of all the same tired stereotypes about the town.

My family have lived in the borough for at least 400 years. Most of these were in Wickford but I have ancestors from Laindon and Basildon during the 1700's and 1800's.

With still more building planned for the area I think it is really important that the borough's history is collected and shared for all to see.

Great work!
